Research Invest-NL offers a strategic outlook for the future of the Dutch textile sorting sector

The transition to a circular textile chain requires more than just investment. Invest-NL examined the business case of the Dutch sorting sector and concludes that additional financing and cohesive policy must reinforce each other to build a robust textile recycling system. The report ‘The business case for sorting Dutch sorting goods within the Netherlands’ provides concrete operational perspectives for government and market parties.

Sorting under pressure

The report has been prepared as a supplement to the Textile Table, in which government, businesses and social organisations collaborate to accelerate a circular textile chain.

Sorting forms the link between collection, reuse and recycling. At the same time, the economic feasibility of this link is under pressure due to high costs, market uncertainty and limited demand for recycled materials.

Innovation alone is not enough

The report shows that innovation and automation can significantly improve the business case. However, this alone is not sufficient to make the sector future-proof. Predictable conditions, demand-stimulating policies and appropriate financing instruments are also necessary.

With the research, Invest-NL aims to help government and market parties make targeted choices. Lessons from other circular value chains, such as the plastic recycling sector, have also been incorporated. These demonstrate that investments alone are insufficient if market demand, regulation, and funding are not developed cohesively.

Basis for new financing solutions

For Invest-NL, the report provides a foundation for developing financing solutions that enable investments in the circular textile chain. Through its market development activities, Invest-NL works on solutions that support the scaling up of circular value chains.

Together with public and private partners, Invest-NL aims to contribute to a circular textiles system that is economically sustainable and creates long-term value for the Netherlands.
