Invest-NL invests in Carbeau for scaling up CO₂ to sustainable chemicals

Carbeau is developing a technology that captures CO₂ and converts it into chemical building blocks for products such as personal care items and packaging. The process delivers a pure material, free from harmful by-products. In the longer term, the technology also offers opportunities for biodegradable plastics as an alternative to fossil-based plastics and possibly even materials with a CO₂-negative footprint. 

From FOAK to scaling up

With this investment, Invest-NL supports the development of a first-of-a-kind demonstration installation by Carbeau, enabling the technology to be tested at a larger scale and a next step towards commercialisation to be taken. In this way, Invest-NL helps advance a solution that can replace fossil raw materials with CO₂-based alternatives and contributes to a more sustainable chemical industry, more circular material flows, and the prevention of plastic pollution and microplastics. 

Strong consortium for the next phase 

The investment round brings together capital, industrial expertise, and regional anchoring. GIG Karasek provides technical expertise for further development and demonstration of the technology, Al Baleed Petrochemical shares knowledge on the construction of chemical facilities, and NOM enhances integration into the North Netherlands ecosystem. This combination gives Carbeau a strong foundation for the next phase. 

Strengthening innovation in the Netherlands and Europe 

Carbeau is based in Amsterdam and is working on the demonstration installation in Delfzijl. This investment thereby strengthens the Dutch innovation ecosystem in sustainable chemistry and Europe's position in circular and fossil-free materials. It aligns with Invest-NL’s role to mobilise capital and assist companies in scaling up where the market remains hesitant.
