Sufficient capital available for offshore wind financing

On Friday, 2 October, Invest-NL CEO Wouter Bos presented the report ‘Financing offshore wind’* (in an ‘online’ setting) to Ed Nijpels, chair of the Climate Agreement Progress Committee. The report shows that investors see offshore wind as a mature market. There is growing interest and an increasing availability of capital for this market. Therefore, Invest-NL is optimistic about the long-term availability of financing for offshore wind.

Wouter Bos: “We have looked at the market and concluded that Offshore Wind remains well fundable in the future. The investors are there, the capital is available, the risks can be priced in. What is lacking now is certainty on the demand side. It is important now to fully focus on stimulating demand from, for example, industry, such as through electrification. From Invest-NL, we are also primarily looking at how we can contribute and accelerate innovations in this area.”

Ed Nijpels is pleased with the report and the advice from Invest-NL: “It’s good to see that investors see a future in Offshore Wind. It’s logical that they attach great importance to ensuring there is sufficient demand for sustainable electricity. That is why it’s important to quickly stimulate demand in industry, mobility, and the built environment. Then all sectors can accelerate to achieve the necessary sustainability transition.”

*The report ‘Financing offshore wind’ is a result of the Climate Agreement. Invest-NL co-authored the report at the request of the ‘electricity sector table’. On behalf of Invest-NL, consultancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers conducted a market consultation among investors and financiers.
