Invest-NL funds Volta Energy for scaling up cleaner mobile power

Volta Energy develops and rents out hybrid mobile energy systems for sectors including construction, telecommunications and security. These systems combine solar energy, battery storage and a biofuel generator. With this, Volta Energy offers a practical alternative to traditional diesel generators at sites where temporary or off-grid power is needed.

Room for scaling up and impact

Volta Energy is a Dutch scale-up from Duiven and has already deployed more than 500 systems commercially in the field. With this investment, the company can expand its fleet of hybrid mobile energy systems mainly in the Netherlands and Germany. This allows the company to scale further and increases Volta Energy’s impact in sectors still heavily reliant on diesel.

Volta Energy aims to gradually replace mobile diesel generators. The company's solution reduces diesel consumption by 60 to 90 percent compared to conventional alternatives. This results in less CO₂ emissions and fewer emissions of other harmful substances, such as NOx. At the same time, Volta Energy takes work off customers’ hands with an energy-as-a-service model, including management, monitoring and maintenance. Meanwhile, the proposition is significantly cheaper for customers compared to using diesel generators, effectively providing a ‘green discount’.

Aligned with Invest-NL’s strategy

The investment fits within Invest-NL's strategy to accelerate societal transitions and address financing bottlenecks. Invest-NL also focuses on companies that have already proven their solution in the market and are ready for the next step.

From Structured Finance & Corporate Investments, Invest-NL deploys suitable investment and financing structures. Volta Energy is a good example of this, says Remco Westerbeek, investment manager: “This is an enterprise with a proven proposition, material turnover and physical assets. Thanks to that strong commercial basis, Invest-NL and ING could jointly provide significant financing aligned with the company’s next growth phase.” With this financing, Invest-NL and ING support Volta Energy’s further scaling and accelerate the transition to cleaner mobile energy.
