Invest-NL attracts more European capital to the Netherlands

Invest-NL is expanding its collaboration with the European Commission. An increase in the existing InvestEU Equity guarantee and a new loan guarantee will give Invest-NL more scope to finance innovative companies and capital-intensive projects. In this way, Invest-NL is bringing more European capital to the Netherlands and further strengthening our role as a connector between public capital and entrepreneurs.

New guarantee enables complex projects

The new InvestEU loan guarantee makes it possible to finance projects with a higher risk profile. These include, for example, projects involving risks related to technological development, the construction phase or market introduction. By sharing risks with the European Commission, additional scope is created to resolve financing bottlenecks and finance projects where the market is still hesitant.

“This guarantee allows us to translate European frameworks into concrete financing for projects in the Netherlands. It is an important instrument for creating greater impact, together with the European Commission,” says Kees Lakerveld, senior business development manager at Invest-NL.

One example is the financing for Milence. Thanks to the InvestEU guarantee, Invest-NL was able to provide a €50 million loan – of which €25 million was provided by Invest International – for the further rollout of charging infrastructure for electric freight transport.

More scope to invest in innovative companies

In addition to the InvestEU loan guarantee, the existing InvestEU equity guarantee is being expanded. This guarantee allows Invest-NL to take on more risk when investing in innovative companies that need capital to develop further and scale up.

The equity guarantee has previously been used for investments in, among others, Thorizon, Mosa Meat and QuiX Quantum. With the expansion, Invest-NL can support even more innovative companies during phases in which market financing is not yet a given.

From instrument to action

With both guarantees, Invest-NL connects European funds to Dutch companies and projects. This enables Invest-NL to bear more risk, resolve financing bottlenecks and mobilise other capital.

In the coming period, Invest-NL will actively deploy the guarantees to help innovative companies scale up and enable projects that contribute to an innovative, sustainable and resilient Netherlands.
