The Protein Brewery ready for commercial growth with € 30 million investment

The Protein Brewery, an innovative food ingredients company from Breda, has raised € 30 million in a Series B financing round. Invest-NL is investing € 6 million in the company. In addition to co-lead Novo Holdings, the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) and existing shareholder Unovis are also participating. With this capital, The Protein Brewery can significantly expand its production capacity and accelerate the market introduction of its innovative, fungus-based food ingredient.

Fermotein: sustainable, nutritious and scalable
The Protein Brewery is developing Fermotein: a food ingredient based on a patented fungus. The product contains all essential amino acids, is rich in fibres, and free of allergens and gluten. Thanks to a unique fermentation solution, the production process is much less capital-intensive than other high-quality protein alternatives. This allows Fermotein to be scaled up in a sustainable and cost-competitive manner.

Factory ready for large-scale production
Fermotein is now available on the market in the United States, including in sports nutrition. The factory in Breda is ready to scale up production to 2,500 tonnes per year. With this financing, The Protein Brewery can expand its commercial activities in the United States and Europe. Additionally, they are investing in further product development for applications in baked goods, dairy substitutes, sports nutrition, and meat alternatives.

Daan Meijer, investment manager at Invest-NL, says: “With the unique fermentation solution, The Protein Brewery differentiates itself within the world of alternative proteins and strengthens the Netherlands’ leading position in food innovation. As a Dutch company driving the protein transition, The Protein Brewery sets a new standard in sustainability.”

The Protein Brewery shows that an innovative food product can be impactful and commercially scalable. The company thus contributes to a future-proof, entrepreneurial, and sustainable food system in the Netherlands.
