Funding Perspective for Accelerating Geothermal Energy in the Netherlands

Geothermics can make an important contribution to a sustainable and resilient energy system, but high development costs and uncertainties in the early project phase hinder scaling up. To make projects financially viable more quickly, targeted instruments are needed to reduce risks and enable private financiers to invest earlier.

In this report, Invest-NL, EBN, and Geothermie Nederland identify the main financing bottlenecks and outline four possible financial instruments. It also discusses the role of public funding, collaboration within the heating chain, and the conditions necessary to get promising geothermal projects off the ground more rapidly.
