Carbon credits for plastic recycling

On behalf of Invest-NL, ORCA investigated through the case of Umincorp whether and how carbon credits could provide a new revenue model for plastic recyclers. 

Carbon credits – tradable certificates for avoided CO₂ emissions – can offer an additional revenue model. By certifying the reduction of CO₂ emissions, companies can sell carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. This could generate extra income and make investments more attractive.  

The case of Umincorp demonstrates that these credits could potentially make a difference, provided that certification and market access are arranged in time. However, without guarantees of sales, it remains uncertain, as the market for carbon credits is still small.
