Bottlenecks for deep tech scale-ups in Climate and Energy Transition

November 9, 2020

The research focuses on identifying potential barriers within the innovation ecosystem faced by deep tech startups in the climate & energy transition (C&E). The main conclusion is that in the Netherlands, only 1.3% of deep tech C&E scaleups succeed in completing a funding round of EUR 20m or more. This is the lowest percentage compared to internationally. For example, in Germany, this percentage is 2.2%, in France 3.4%, and in the United Kingdom 4.8%. If in the Netherlands this conversion ratio were increased to the level of the United Kingdom, the funding requirement would significantly rise from EUR 250m to over EUR 1 billion.
