The story of Mireille Ruberg

At Invest-NL, Mireille assesses proposed investments. Simply whether the investments fit with the objectives of Invest-NL. She also manages the investment portfolio and evaluates the impact of factors including macro-economic developments on it. It always comes down to the right balance between return and impact. “My goal is to use the money we invest as Invest-NL for meaningful investments that contribute to a more sustainable world, innovative companies that can change the world but where banks and other investors are (still) not willing to commit their money. Continuity is also very important in this. As Invest-NL, you want to be able to continue doing this for a long time. That often makes it a complex puzzle”  

Mireille has over 25 years of experience in financing companies and spent 10 years working at a sustainable bank before seeing Invest-NL as an opportunity to contribute even more to a sustainable society. “Here, I could make an even bigger impact.”

She has been able to apply her experience even before the start of Invest-NL. “I was really involved in the birth of Invest-NL. Working with others to set up the organisation. A wonderful time. We were truly pioneering. Now, we are growing up. You could see it that way.”

“Actually, we are a start-up. We still have many things to develop. There is room for that too. Taking initiative together. It might sound cliché but no day is the same. That makes working at Invest-NL exciting. Coming from the banking world, I really had to recalibrate. Now I don't know any different.”

The dynamic of the colleagues gives Mireille a lot of energy. Within Invest-NL, many young and enthusiastic people from different disciplines work together. “A team with diverse composition and a shared motivation. We want to contribute to a more sustainable Netherlands.”

Balance in life is important to Mireille. The experience that has shaped her is becoming a mother and guiding the process of her two children from babyhood to adulthood. “The richness of life in all its aspects, the development of a person, is a beautiful process.”

Mireille also enjoys travelling. Especially to the USA. She has set herself the goal of visiting all the states. “I’m quite well on my way and have already visited more than half of the states. I’m drawn to the country. The nature, the hospitality of the people, and the freedom.” She also enjoys coaching young entrepreneurs in her free time. “Free thinking and ambition give me a lot of energy.”

Positivity is essential for Mireille. She always assumes the good. Without that, there is no future. “On my bedside table at the moment is not coincidentally the book ‘De meeste mensen deugen’ by Rutger Bregman. And so it is. It is absolutely good to be critical. I am definitely that myself too. But you also need to be able to approach matters from multiple perspectives. That is something I have learned in the past and still apply daily.”
