The story of Lennart Jansen

A conversation with Lennart is like a walk through nature: open, reflective and full of wonder. And it just so happens that this is also his favourite pastime. After previous roles at VodafoneZiggo and Vodafone Ireland, Lennart deliberately chose to give his career a new direction — one in which he can not only apply his professional expertise but also pursue his ideals.

After a sabbatical during which he completed the entire Pacific Crest Trail with his partner — 4.5 months walking from northern Washington to southern California — he returned with a clear purpose: “I want to contribute directly to a better and more sustainable world through my work”

From outsider to business partner

Lennart has been working for over a year now as an HR Business Partner at Invest-NL. His role is diverse and touches on nearly everything related to people and organizational development. Or as he himself says: “I help leaders develop their teams and address various issues concerning our people, now and in the future. Additionally, I work on policies that ensure colleagues can develop and utilise their talents to the fullest in a positive and attractive working environment.”

His work is partly policy-oriented — such as developing and implementing HR projects — and partly advisory. In discussions with team leads, he talks about both the practical matters of today and the strategic ambitions of tomorrow.

Driven by meaning

What characterizes Lennart is his strong belief that people make the difference. And that you should give these people space to grow, collaborate, and reflect. “HR is really not a policing department. At Invest-NL, we operate from trust. We assume mature individuals in a mature relationship: you do your best as an employee, we as an employer. And then something beautiful happens.”

This vision is not just a way of working; it is also a value that he embodies himself. “I've always been curious about why people do what they do. That fascinates me immensely. And I want to use that curiosity to help others grow.”

Who is Lennart outside working hours?

When Lennart isn't talking to colleagues, he's probably outdoors. Running, walking, or... birdwatching. Yes: “Recently, I’ve started birdwatching. Some think it’s only for older people, but I love it. It gives a whole new dimension to being outside.” He also reads a lot and widely: from philosophy to neuroscience, from history to organisational psychology. No wonder he always has something insightful to say on any subject — with a healthy dose of perspective and humour. “Everyone has a bit of wisdom inside them. You just need to be curious enough to find it.”

Impact starts with people

What Lennart values most about working at Invest-NL are his colleagues. The content, the drive, the shared belief in change. “During lunch, you sit next to someone who knows everything about the protein transition, or you attend a presentation on lab-on-a-chip. Everyone here wants to contribute to solutions. You can feel it, every day.” His HR role is therefore not just facilitative, but fundamental: “If we in HR ensure that our people can make optimal use of their talents, they will make a difference in the world. That’s where the impact lies.”
